B8.3 Passive design for houses in arid and temperate climates.Tropical climates are generally characterised by hot, wet summers, high levels of humidity and little change between day and night temperatures. Movement of air is an important strategy for cooling people down, because...
Farther from the equator, a passive house is mainly a very well insulated house with good exposure to solar lighting for passive solar heating. However in hot climate, one has to rethink completely the design.
The two main passive strategies that are required to promote thermal comfort in the tropics are natural ventilation and solar shading. Tropical climates are characterised by their warm temperatures compared to regions further away from the equator.
Housing acts as an engine of economic growth, and it has become critical in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic from a safety and health perspective. From Hot Spots to Cool Oases: Passive Design and Nature-based
It is the first certified passive house in New York State. Key features include a compact design with continuous insulation and air sealing to minimize heat loss, a south-facing wall of glass to maximize solar gain, and an open floor plan framed by large wooden beams.
The designs are passive because they do not use geothermal, sun or wind energy for power. But Passive House Institute US says even greater savings can be reached with additions like solar water heating systems. They might call that an active passive house.
